"The Town Crier" Town Crier Tip by datapanik
Town Crier, Chester: 2 reviews and 2 photos
Chester is a town so old that there is still a town crier. In a tradition dating back to the 15th century the town crier played an important role in the community by literally shouting out the news of the day. These days however it seems to be a performance played out strictly for the tourists and despite his fine diction and booming delivery the crier actually has very little to say. In fact, once he’s got past greeting all the gathered tourist nationalities in the appropriate manner (e.g. G’day for the Aussies and Willkommen for the Germans) that’s about it! A ten-minute set that’s the same everyday - what a great job! I think this is a golden opportunity to actually tell us something about the forthcoming events, attractions and happenings of Chester. It might be a little harsh to label the town crier a tourist trap but if it wasn't free it wouldn't be far off!
