The Llanganuca Lakes are a picturesque group of three lakes in a mountain valley located in Huascaran National Park. The lakes are a stunning turquoise blue and are surrounded by high glaciered peaks that soar over 6000m about sea level. For hikers the Llanganuca Lakes marks the spot for the beginning of their long hike to Huaraz via the Santa Cruz Loop. I saw many hikers starting out from the lakes during my visit.
The Llanganuca Lakes are frequented by bus tours groups from Huaraz and this is how I visited. This is a good way to visit the Andes Mountains in case you do not have the energy or the time to tackle a five day hike through the region. While visiting the lakes, or better on the way there, you see excellent vistas of Huascaran which at 6768m is the highest peak in Peru.
If there is a problem with the Llanganuca Lakes it is that it has become over touristed. By the banks of the western most lake there are food stalls selling local cuisine. These are interesting but the spot is saturated with tourists. It is also possible for tourists to be canoed out onto the lake for a small fee.
Directions: 28km east of Yungay which is 59km north of Huaraz.
