When walking along Howard Street, you can't miss the sprawling white building. It's The Chalfonte Hotel, which takes up almost an entire block. This stately hotel was built in 1876 by Colonel Henry Sawyer, who was a Civil War hero. He envisioned it as a boarding house, but expanded it in 1876-1909 to accommodate a larger clientele.
It's a short walk to shops, restaurants and the beach. The Chalfonte has 70 guest rooms and 12 private baths. A full breakfast is served. There is a three night minimum on a holiday weekend--reservations run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The long veranda generously stocked with rocking chairs give those who stay here a comfortable place to relax and reconnect with the past. Accommodations range from $135-$299 per night.
