Opposite the Basilica is the Loggia dei Capitaniato designed by Palladio in 1571 to replace the medieval residence of the "Capitanio", the representative of Serenissima.

The building, in red brick and white stone and stucco, which initially was supposed to have five bays, was left unfinished and has today only three bays, defined by four enormous semi-columns.

The decorations on the facade symbolize the nearby rivers represented by figures pouring water.

The lateral bays are decorated with allegorical statues remembering the great victory of Lepanto in 1571.

On the upper floor there are four statues: Faith, Mercy, Virtue and Honor.

The upper hall, used today as the council chamber, is adorned with 16th-century frescoes.
