It was still pretty early and cool when we reached Laguna Verde in the southwesternmost part of Bolivia. It gets its green color from arsenic and other minerals in the water. We were told that it gets more green as the temperature increases. Volcan de Calcon made a good reflection. There were no flamingos in Laguna Verde because of the arsenic but we did see vicunas in the area above the lake. It turned out that a month later the Licancabur Expedition visited Laguna Verde and found "a small system of geothermal springs on the north shore of Laguna Verde. These springs are teeming with life including what appear to be colonies of cyanobacteria in the early stages of stromatolite formation. Although it's too early to draw any formal conclusions, this site may represent a rare window back in time to life's beginnings on Earth." Even scientifically the site is an amazing place.
