The Grand Place lies in the Lower Town area of Brussels and will possibly be your first port of call as it?s near the main hotel, restaurant and bar area of the city. It?s right in the geographical, historical and commercial heart of the city and is basically a bustling cobblestone square that is surrounded by the best of Belgium?s ornate 17th century architecture. Open-air markets took place on or near this site as early as the 11th century, but by the end of the 14th century Brussels? town hall, the Hotel de Ville (which dominates the whole south-western side of the square), was built, and city traders added individual guildhouses in a medley of styles. The square was named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
