"Tuff !! You took a wrong turn!!" Kruft Things to Do Tip by hquittner
Kruft Things to Do: 1 reviews and 5 photos
I can see no reason to drive into Kruft. We came off the A61 and went West on the B256 instead of East to Andernach. Actually we were looking for the tuff stone works which we ultimately also missed going East. In Andernach the T.O. gave us a map and literature (German only). It was Sunday and Andernach was closed and deserted. We headed back on B256 and just beyond the town of Kretz on the right (north)was a small sign to what we wanted: the Romerbergwerk Meurin. The road ended at an unmarked area with a few parked cars and a nice WC, We were here?? Beyond the WC was a path of some 200 meters and rising up in the cleared woods was a large modern shed-like building. Inside was an admission desk (fee) and the exhibit. We paid and each received an English audiophone. For an hour or so we wandered through the beautifully reconstructed dig and now know the difference between a Maar and a volcanic lake, tuff and tufa, how the Romans built roads and the mining operations of the stone (much of Maria Laach is tuff). All this is done with masterful and thorough Germanic precision. I heartily recommend the experience. Unfortunately nobody will ever read this or any other similar Tip because there is no reason to open a Kruft page and VT abhors places that are not towns (like Pont du Gard, Castel del Monte, etc).
Directions: To the N off B256 going East from A61(exit35) just about at Kretz.
