The fort was built by Grand Master Wignacourt in1610 . Fort St. Lucjan was originally armed with six strong bronze cannons. It was surrounded by a dry ditch and had a drawbridge. . During the invasion of Malta by the French in 1798, Fort St. Lucjan was one of the few forts to offer resistance to the forces of Napoleon. It continued to fire on the French troops until the ammunition had run out.Between the late forties and early sixties, Fort St. Lucjan was used by the R.A.F. as a bomb depot. It also served as a military prison in certain periods. Now the tower is was allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in order to accommodate the newly set up National Aquaculture Centre. To reach the tower walk all the way past the Marsaxlokk waterfront were the market is held, up the hill and turn left. Only ten minutes walk from the church.
