Prambanan - open to public now
by bpacker

Prambanan made the headlines recently ( May 2006) when it was reported to be damaged during a powerful earthquake. It's a real pity considering that reconstruction efforts were nearly finished when I was there in Feb 2006. Recent photos suggest that the damage was significant, with large pieces of stupas and carvings scattered all over the ground. The temple has since been open to the public though entry to the temples are forbidden now.

Though I have seen Angkor Wat, the sight of the Prambanan Temple complex still took my breath away. Little wonder since it is the LARGEST temple in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Read more about my adventures over here

Where
18 km east of Yogyakarta

What
There are 8 candis ( temples) in the complex but I only visited the 3 main ones ( Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu)

How much Moolah
Admission fees can be astronomical to a budget tourist at USD12.
The admission officer hastily charged me USD6.50 (student price) after my mouth hung so low it threatened to drop.

How to go there
Take a cab from Marlioboro. A 2 way journey cost about USD10. Economically, this makes sense if you share a cab with someone.

Availability of Cheap Tours
Yes, agencies in Prawirotaman arranges for sunset tours to this place ( you watch the sunset from boko hill ) The going rate is about 45,000rp (USD5) per pax.
