"Afternoon Tea at the Empress Hotel" Victoria Tourist Trap Tip by jasperdo
Victoria Tourist Traps: 25 reviews and 23 photos
Let me start by saying that the Empress Hotel itself is definately not a tourist trap. It is a beautiful, historic, ivy covered hotel that defines Victoria. By all means go inside and wander through the hallways and shops. You won't be disappointed. That said, I feel that Afternoon Tea at the Empress is a vastly overpriced tourist trap. The current price per person for the summer of 2006 is a whopping $53 CDN per person. For this price you are served tea and finger food sandwiches and desserts. The room it is served in was the old hotel lobby and is quite elegent and impressive. However, at $53 it is a definate tourist trap.
Fun Alternatives: If you insist on Afternoon Tea in Victoria, Murchie's Tea on Government Street might be a better choice. It is half the price at $24.95 CDN per person. Further out in the town of Oak Bay, The Blethering Place serves Afternoon Tea for 14.95 CDN per person.
