Perhaps the second central point next to Preseren Square is Kongresni Trg. It is the largest of the famous squares in Ljubljana's city center and surrounded by many interesting buildings. In the south, you will find the University of Ljubljana, built as a palace in 1902. The building of the philharmonic orchestra in the east was built in 1701 and the Ursuline church of the Holy Trinity in the west is one of the largest of the city. Sometimes, the square is called Zvezda (star) due to the form of its path and the trees planted along them.

Kongresni Trg was named after the congress of the holy alliance between Austria, Prussia, the state of Naples and Russia held in 1821. On June 25th 1991 it played an even bigger role. It was the place where Milan Kucan spoke out the famous words: "This evening, dreams are allowed - Tomorrow is another day". It was the day when Slovenia declared its independence by pulling out of the yugoslav federation. Two days later, the 10-days-war for independence began.
