  St. Elisabeth Church
by wroclawiak

St. Elisabeth Church with its characteristic tower crowned with a Renaissance cupola stands in the southwesern corner oft the Market Square. From the top you can admire the city panorama. The tower is 90 meters high. NO LIFT. The tower originally was almmost 130 meters high and was one of the highest buildings of its kind in Silesia. In 1529 the cupola was destroyed during a hurricane and was not completely restored. Since no lives were lost in the catastrophe a legend was born that angels supported the church tower. A relief depicting this scene may still be seen on the outer wall of the church. The building took on its present appeance in the 15th century. Nowadays it is a Roman Catholic garrison church and a smaller basilica. The church survived the WW II but after the Was has caught fire three times (in 1962, 1975,1976). Many of the histroch furnishings of the church have been rrecoverably destroyed.
