Mama's: "Southern Homestyle Cooking at Mama's" Top 5 Page for this destination Mama's Food Shop - CLOSED Tip by shutterlust

A very different experience, located down in Alphabet City on East 3rd Street, a small restaurant, Mama's is known for her HUGE portions and hearty homestyled cooking. The servings are so large most of the time people split a dish, which is about $10 for a main dish and two smaller sides. Most people split them or take them home for another meal. Warning, the food is not served hot, instead they are cooked at one point and then left out, buffet style (only one of the employees serves the food instead of self-serve). The food is served semi-warm, but it's delicious anyway. You might be lucky to come in once they've cooked another batch, but they make such huge portions, it's not likely. The food is great either way and i've enjoyed it irregardless of the temperature. I love Mama's, for both food and atmosphere. It's very small and rather dark, but interesting decor, i.e, the portraits of different women all over the walls. It's a different experience from what most tourists see in NY.

Favorite Dish: The fried chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, roasted potates, green beans
