The Harry Byrd Visitor Center is at Big Meadows and is one of the main visitor facilities in the park. In May 2006, it was being renovated, though the gift shop and information desk were still open. Inside the visitor center, there are windows that look out onto Big Meadows- it's quite a view. I have never seen Shenandoah during the peak wildflower season, but supposedly during that time Big Meadows is very beautiful. Wildflowers start in April and become copious during late June- early July before fading out.
