"Hotel Pansea Tower" Qasr Ghilan Things to Do Tip by dwjohnsonla

Qasr Ghilan Things to Do: 35 reviews and 48 photos

This remote outpost is hard to find, in more ways than one. In one of the quirks of Arabic transliteration, Ksar Ghilane can be spelled in different ways. Qasr, Qsar, Ksar and Kasr can combine with Ghilane, Ghilan, Gilan, or Gilane. In any event, this Ksar (meaning fort) can be found at the end of a four to six hour trek by four wheel drive (usually with guide) from the Coast (Sfax, Gafsa, or Djerba) or the Desert (Tozeur or Douz). The trek is rewarded with a stunning view from the tower at Pansea over the expanse of the Sahara. The desert redefines our color palette with the richness of the blue clear sky, the green of the palm oasis, and the brown of the sand. The silence and peacefulness of the desert is also extraordinary. The tower overlooks the luxury linen tent Hotel Pansea, the campgrounds nearby, the hot swimming oasis, and, of course, the desert with the camel and quad trekkers. There are also Roman fort ruins in the desert (yes, they were here too). Interestingly, the restauranteur at the Pansea, who speaks wonderful French, is a Bedouin who prefers to sleep on the desert sands under the stars when he is not working. What a great life !
