Day 5 is mainly Yili city tour. Before Urumqi, Yili was the central city of the Xinjiang State (where the main china was in war itself and the area was not under control). But it is very hard to get there from the outside in today's view. There is no highway nor railway to there. It is mainly because Yili is on the western side of TianShan moutain. The only way to get there is through flight.

Not like the majority part of western china where the land is almost not cultivatable, Yili has rich lands because of TianShan blocked a lot of water for it. It has a title of "Small JiangNan" and I found it quite true. Being at Yili, it is very hard to imagine you are at the dessert Western China.

We went to the Chinese-Kazakstein border and had a roasted whole goat in the afternoon. The goat is very fresh and full of natural flavors. Roasted whole goat is a must try in Xinjiang. The one on our table cost us 400 yuan which is $50, but I guess that is half goat. Our guide led us to the resturant so I don't really know its name. The people in the resturant are truely native Uygur people who don't even speak Chinese.

Yili is also known for its production of Lavandula. So we bought some dry products of Lavandula. In Yili you can find other products that are typically not grown in mainland china but in european countries.

In summary, Yili is a natural and still not so tourismized place in Xinjiang. I really enjoy that kind of place.
