"Attempting to explain the Astronomical Clock" Old-Town Hall Tip by easyoar
Old-Town Hall, Prague: 153 reviews and 273 photos
This clock has two dials which can make it a little confusing! My first picture here shows a close up of these two dials, the second shows the side of the Old Town Hall with the clock on to put it more in context with the building.
The higher dial is basically the clock. It is a standard clock but using all 12 numbers twice. This uses Roman Numerals. Around the outside of this are 24 Gothic numbers (but don't ask me to identify exactly what number each sign represents!). This ring of numbers can rotate independently of the clock. When gothic number 24 is pointed to, it means it is sunset. There is also another ring with the 12 signs of the zodiac on, and will show you where abouts the sun is in the sky. This clock gets more complex yet, and my understanding gets less and less. It also shows Babylonian time!
The second dial underneath is basically a calender. This is supposed to show the day of the month and indicate saints days so that people knew when it was a public holiday!
Address: Starometska radnice, Starometske namesti.
