Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg, Hamburg: 64 reviews and 5 photos
Life at the Hotel Gastwerk is a combination of high-end Executive lifestyle and "scenester chic". There's the usual mix of international businessmen and fasionistas on advertising assignments from Hamburg and across Europe. In spite of this the staff remains very professional and friendly, more than hotels you find of the same catagory in Paris, New York, or Miami Beach. Being housed in a refurbished gasworks factory, the lobbies have a wonderfully loft-like airy feeling and the decor is modern and minimalist, yet still retains a warm feeling and are nonthing short of top notch. It is somewhat affordable ( starting at 149 euro p.nite), but due to it's size and accomadation for an international clientele, it's a hotel best suited for those who are not familiar with or used to the more bare bones boutique style of European hotels , and even better for those traveling on expense accounts.
Unique Qualities: Again, the hotel is housed in an old gas factory, but the renovations are nothing than than perfect in the urban sense of the word. The decor is Asian inspired, gearing towards the modern, tasteful ,elegant style of the Japanese, and the lobby reflects a feeling of peacefulness and serenity upon entering. The rooms themselves range from your standard 150 euro per nite room, with full modern bathroom and Japanese style decor, to pricer loft style rooms with exposed brick walls and decor more reminiscent of feautures you see in "Metropolitan Home" or "ELLE DECOR" magazines. Included in your room price are are access to the hotel's marble sauna ( with small relaxation rooms), and one free pass per guest to fitness club ELEXIA next door. Breakfast buffet available for approximately 13 euro per person, and there is an upscale Italian inspired restaurant on the premises. In close (taxi) proximity of the theatres that house Broadway style musicals like Mama Mia and Dirty Dancing. On the website for Gastwerk you can usually find a special offer for a spa, theatre, or romantic weekend for two, including breakfast and an extra travel value. In general prices are per room rather than per person, the latter of which is usually the case in other parts of Europe. There isn't anything by way of attraction in the immediate vcinity surrounding the hotel, because it's housed smack in the middle of a quiet residential part of Altona-Ottensen. But the bustling neighborhood life of cafes and shopping are 10 blocks walking distance/ 4 bus stops on the #2 , or 5 euro by taxi if you ask the driver to drop you at ALTONA BAHNHOF.
