"The Tower of London - my personal highlight" Tower of London Tip by Airpunk
Tower of London, London: 523 reviews and 935 photos
This may be one of the most crowded attractions in London and is surely among the most expensive ones. But it is worth every penny if you want to experience some english history.
A yeoman warder (better known as beefeaters) will guide you through the tower and give you information about some places like the bloody tower, the traitor's gate or the chapel. You will hear stories about what happenede in the tower like the executions of Henry the VIII.'s wifes or the boys in the tower. Although the stories have mostly to do with murder and intrigues, the warder does the tour in a very humorous way so that you will be informed and will habe a lot of fun in the tower. This tour is included in your entry charge and lasts around 30 minutes.
Afterwards, you are free to walk around the buildings of the tower on your own: There is the White Tower (main building with large exhibition in 7 languages), the Jewel House (crown Jewels), several smaller towers (you can learn some more about the mytery around Edward V.'s killing), remains of roman walls and many more attractions.
The tower itself was constructed on a place where roman fortifications used to be. It was one of William the Conqueror's first castles and beside Windsor castle surely his most famous one. For many years, it was the residence of the royal family, but during the centuries it also served as a prison or gunpowder storage. The exhibition in the White Tower will give you a lot of information about the history of the castle and the monarchs who lived in this fortress.
