Sumner, Christchurch: 3 reviews and 6 photos
We wanted to go to the cinema on our last night in Christchurch but the film we wanted to see was only showing at one place - Hollywood Masters in Sumner.
"Where's that?" we asked.
"Right across town" - the reply. "It'll take you half an hour to get there from here!"
So off we set for Sumner - and we were so glad that we had. What a charming place it turned out to be. A seaside suburb to the south-east of the city centre, beyond the narrow mouth of the Avon Estuary, looking out over Pegasus Bay but facing north and with a headland and the heights of the Port Hills to protect it a little from the winds that blow up so fiercely here from the southern Pacific. No wonder it was one of the first parts in the Christchurch region to be settled.
There's a nice villagey feel to Sumner. The main street is lined with interesting shops and boutiques, there are lots of little restaurants and bars, and then there's the cinema - another of the quirky little picture houses in the vein of those in Wanaka and Akaroa.
The evening was drawing in when we got there - just time for a short walk along the beach as the last rays of the sun hit the headland - so off we went to the cinema (and a passable curry afterwards at Little India just down the road) but we're definitely coming back to Sumner next time we're in Christchurch. Then we'll come during the day, take a walk around the headland to the intriguingly named Taylor's Mistake, and find an outdoor cafe for a long lazy lunch - we might even take in a movie before we head back for the city centre.
