"Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory" Sri Lanka Things to Do Tip by jungles
Sri Lanka Things to Do: 539 reviews and 890 photos
This is one of many tea factories in the hill country that offer tours for visitors. It is very interesting to see the whole process by which tea is made, whether or not you're an avid tea drinker. A guided tour of the factory costs Rs 150 per person, and they will take you around even if there are only two of you. The finished product is also available for sale, but there's no pressure to buy. The female pickers are skilled at their craft and can pick up to 30kg of tea leaves in a day, for which they earn about Rs 275 (US$ 2.75).
Directions: Between Ella and Dambulla up a steep side road; your own transport is advisable. Alternatively, the Newburg Tea Factory is within walking distance of Ella (3km).
