Boca Chica Beach at end of Boca China Rd.

If you head east out of Brownsville toward Boca Chica Beach, you will pass through interesting flats and dunes. This is where we found our only Aplomado Falcon of the trip. This falcon once was found in this area but died out a long time ago. It was reintroduced at Laguna Atascosa Nat. Wildlife Refuge and the first breeding of the captive reared birds in the wild was in 1995 at this refuge. Since 1997 over 100 captive reared young have been released along the Texas coast. This resulted in establishment of at least 37 Aplomado Falcon pairs that have produced over 92 young in the wild. In spite of all of this, this species is still quite hard to see in S. Texas so we counted outselves fortunate to find one perched up on a dune in clear view. It's a beautiful falcon that is similar to the Peregrine Falcon but is a bit smaller.
At the end of this road is Boca Chica Beach where you can see typical beach birds.
