At the other end of Torri del Benaco is the town's late mediaeval tower of Berengario. Originally conceived by the Scagliers as a watchtower it was later altered in 1551-52 and the clock appeared in 1561. This tower clock was the first of its kind in the region and was quite a pretige thing to have, ringing out the times of the day and so helpful to the local residents for setting the time each day. Note the clock face with italinate sundial (dividing day into 24 hours) has roman and arabic numerals and the remains of frescos. At sundown 24 strokes would ring out whilst 1 stroke signalled first hour of the night.
