What a wonderful place to stay in Richmond, Indiana...The Philip W. Smith Bed & Breakfast! It's a great location for what we were doing; we were able to walk down the block to the Glen Miller Park to see the "Madonna of the Road" on Main Street (The National Road), and easy access to downtown Richmond, some fine restaurants, and our route to Ohio.

The room comes with a complimentary full breakfast, served in the beautiful dining room. There are 6 different rooms, all quite lovely. Each room has a private bath, cable television, in-room telephone, and beautiful furnishings.

We stayed on a Thursday evening, and we were the only ones there. The weekend was booked solid. We choice Guest Room #5, which we affectionately dubbed "The Blue Room".

It was a large room with a series of three windows that looked out on a home next door. It's advantage was how quiet it was (some rooms face Main (Route 40). It was decorated in blue and white with several delightful "touches" that made it more comfortable. There was a Windsor king size bed and a settee.

Unique Qualities: We felt we got a great deal for the $109.00 that we paid. Of course, there is a 16% tax added on to that!

Parking is easy street parking; there's a pretty backyard with lovely flowers and a glider.
The house itself is magnificent. It's an elegant Queen-Anne Victorian in the Glen Miller Park Historic District The home has been restored to its 1890 grandeur. It's a 2 1/2 story brich with Romanesque details, ornate carved wood, and gorgeous stained glass windows.

It was named after Philip W. Smith, an "esteemed citizen of Wayne County and the town of Richmond". The present owners, Kris and Jill Nelson, have done a grand job with the interior.

There is a huge Gingko Tree in the yard that came from the Emperor of Japan in 1895.

The breakfast was wonderful, conversation with Kris Nelson's mother (a teacher also) was delightful. We would gladly return to Philip W. Smith Bed and Breakfast again.
