More than 230 statues were transported considerable distances from the Rano Raraku quarry to platforms around the edge of the island, where they were erected with their backs to the sea. They are beleived to represent ancestor figures. It was thought that the statues were dragged to their destination but experiments suggest now that the most efficient way of moving them was upright on sledges and rollers.
