2006 is the 70th anniversary of the games and the g-p tourist website under Information/Press has a good article. it also confirms the renovation of the bobsleigh run and the availablity of an Olympic site map (Erlebnistour-olympia). The Ski Stadium and Ice centre have both been modernised since 1936 when wooden temporary grandstands were used. The Ski Stadium stone terraces were built for the 1940 Olympics. The ski stadium hosted the opening and closing ceromonies, the 90 metre jumping and was the finish for the cross-country skiing. The Ice centre concentrated on figure skating. The Kreuzeck slopes held the first Alpine competitions. Reisseresee held the Ice Hockey and Speed Skating whilst on the south side of the lake was the finish for the bob events. The bob course closed in 1966 but has now been cleared. In 2003 I climbed up from the pump station and canteen huts and followed the rails of the drag lift to the start. At the top a few disused items of machinery remained. The course was overgrown but passable and the remains of a footbridge by the Bayern curve were still there. it wasn't as steep as I thought it would be. Cleared now it will be an interesting walk. By the Seehof there is a map of Reissersee in 1936 showing where the events were held. To see some photos of the Events themselves I reccomend looking at www.olympic.au.com and Topfoto.uk.com. The bobsleighs are nothing like today's sleek machines and the ski jumpers wore ties! Most of the original stuff has gone but walk the sites and compare them with the photos. The north towers of the Ski Stadium list the winners but for Brit tourists we won the Ice Hockey gold and 4-man bob bronze whilst Cecelia Colledge won a figure skating silver aged 15. A very good year by our standards!
