London Bridge is - next to Tower Bridge - the best known bridge in London, but unfortunately also one of the ugliest. The first bridge on this place was built during roman times. Several other structures followed which were either destroyed by fire or pulled down for other reasons as larger ships or to prevent ice accumulation in winter. The current bridge was opened in 1973 after its predecessor was sold and partly rebuilt in Arizona (!). The bridge is also known for the song "London Bridge is falling down" which dates back to the time when King Ethelred destroyed the bridge as part of a military strategy.

If you are interested in Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, then you should check out my "Off the beaten path" tips for Nancy's steps which are part of the bridge.
