"Opera for beginners" Chiesa San Paolo Dentro le Mura Tip by Paisleypaul

Operas minus the formality, St Paul in the Wall
by Paisleypaul

I see in the forums on Rome that this comes up occasionally - can you watch opera in Rome (1) Without taking a £1500 suit in your backpack (2) Without paying Eu 100's a ticket (3) centrally and (4) in company of locals and other visitors such that there is not some great international incident involving burning embassies because of some operatic faux pas on the VTer's part.

Yes !

The Chiesa di San Paolo Entro le Mura (church of St Paul 'within the walls', i.e first protestant church to be built with in the walled city) hosts 2 different shows 3 nights a week by I Musici Veneziani - "Enchanting Opera Arias" on Tuesdays and Fridays & "Classics & Opera Arias" Saturdays, with all musicians in authectic Venetian costume.

Tickets are Eu20 each (with some Eu30 premium tickets available) from ticket outlets or directly outside the church on the street most days, vendors taking bookings sometimes also in period costume

Address: Via Nazionale, near Piazza della Republicca
Directions: Via Nazionale, near corner of Via Napoli, and near Piazza della Republicca.

Right across the road from my beloved Hotel Miami - we listen to the bells of San Paolo entro le Mura on a Sunday morning, an evocative Roman memory
