Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano, Rome: 60 reviews and 142 photos

The mother of all churches - the first Christian basilica in Rome, founded by Constantine the Great, the church has stood here since 313, but has been burnt down twice and rebuilt several times. It was the centre of the Catholic church until the seat of the papacy was transferred to the Vatican in the 14th century. Even then the Lateran remained an important centre for the church - popes were still crowned there in 1870.

My favourite part of the church was the cloister (E2 entrance fee), a delightfully tranquil area filled with many fragments of ancient and medieval sculpture.
