Apollo Fountain, Versailles: 8 reviews and 15 photos
Bassin d'Apollon : Dominated by the God himself on a chariot drawn by four hourses rising up from the water and surrounded by Tritons who blow their conch shells to announce the rising sun
In 1661 Louis XIV firmly established his personal power, appealing to "divine right" and choosing the sun as his emblem. This is why he must have been singularly delighted in seeing Apollo, son of Jupiter and Latona, God of light -Arts and Letters and himself on equal base.
This extraordinary sculpture in gilded bronze is a work of Batiste Tuby, on a design of
Le Brun, the first painter and co-ordinator of the various artistic crafts.
