United Kingdom Off The Beaten Path: 420 reviews and 440 photos

This fort was built by the Hanoverian King George II after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden as the ultimate defence against any further unrest. It is built on a barren headland jutting out onto the Moray Firth at Ardersier (NE of Inverness) and is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. The 18th century defences and original garrison buildings are still intact. The fort took 21 years to build and cost (at todays prices) 1 billion pounds but actually there has never been a shot fired in anger there.
At 6 miles west of Nairn and 11 miles NE of Inverness off the A96
Getting there by bus: bus number 11 from the post office in Inverness
Train Nairn station is 7 miles away and Inverness station is 11 miles away.
Tel: 01667 462777
Open all year 7 days a week (expect 25th and 26th December)
