"Alligators at Night" Everglades National Park Things to Do Tip by Kasejason

Everglades National Park Things to Do: 194 reviews and 362 photos

While in the Everglades during the spring, a ranger suggested that we visit the Anhinga Trail at night. She said that, if we held our flashlights at eye - level and shone them into the water, we would be amazed at what we saw. We went out to the trail that night, walked onto the boardwalk above the water, and did just as she had suggested. The sight that we saw in the water was perhaps the most frightening and at the same time most excellent sight we'd seen in our entire trip. It seems that alligator eyes glow with an orangish light when they reflect flashlight light. The sheer amount of alligator eyes that we saw in the water below was amazing. Not only were there many more than we had seen in the day, they also seemed to be a good deal more active. We observed several alligators growling and lunging at each other in the water. This was by far the best experience of my entire Everglades Trip.
