"Sailing in a Felucca" Aswan Things to Do Tip by AnnemarieC

The feluccas are the old-fashioned sailing boats that you see so frequently on the Nile. If there is no wind, they have to be powered by motor but hopefully you be lucky enough to have enough to breeze to get the sails up. Be warned though, it can be quite choppy if it's windy and the boats have to tack (zig-zag) across the river, which can be a bit hair-raising if you are not that keen on water.

Negotiate the price before you set off and don't be surprised if it has increased a bit by the time you get off again!

Most people just sail around Elephantine Island, which takes about 40 mins but if you have the time try to go up passed the Old Cataract Hotel and up to the 'beach' area. You will leave all the traffic behind and sail gently between the huge bolders in the Nile. If you are lucky he will switch the engine off too, you can then drift along on the current in the sunshine and complete silence - it's magical.
