"Nilometer" Aswan Things to Do Tip by AnnemarieC

Aswan Things to Do: 334 reviews and 775 photos

An interesting (but small) thing to see is the Nilometer on Elephantine Island. I think that you can only visit it when you buy a ticket to see the ruined temple that is there also. Most guides by-pass the Nilometer but it’s a wonderful thing. It is built into the rocks and the steps lead down to the Nile. It has ancient inscriptions dating back thousands of years and was used as a giant measuring stick. It used to measure the annual Nile flood, which in turn all deposited silt on the banks of the Nile and allowed crops to be grown. The taxes for the following year were based on the level of the flood. Sadly, the Nile doesn’t flood anymore because of the High dam. Be careful as the steps are very steep and some are slightly eroded
