Waiheke Island is an island in the Hauraki Gulf in the outer edge of Auckland Harbour. The island is home to about 10,000 Aucklanders with the population concentrated on the left hand side of the island. It is a great get-away for Aucklanders and tourists alike and is especially good to sample watersports like kayaking and fishing in the summer. Waiheke is said to be a few degrees warmer than mainland Auckland and the climate is great for growing grapes. There are a large number of vineyards on the island. The main beaches are Oneroa, Palm and Onetangi. The island also has an interesting war time heritage with a large underground tunnels and gun emplacements at a place called Stoney Batter on the far end of the island (reachable by car only).

Directions: Take a Fullers Ferry from the Auckland Downtown Ferry terminal. Buses and Taxis are on the island.
