Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. It reputedly gets its name from the fact that Crusaders gathered here before setting off for the Holy Lands. It was originally the brewhouse for Nottingham Castle and it was probably built shortly after the original castle was established in 1086 .

The date on the wall, 1189, was the year Richard the Lionheart was crowned and embarked on the Third Crusade, and the year in which many of the Crusaders gathered here.

The half-timbered buildings you can see at the front today were added between 1650 and 1660. The warren of small bars inside are built in the sandstone caves of the original brewhouse, and have uneven, bare rock walls. They are pleasantly cool in summer, but can seem cold and damp in winter, although you can sit close to the electric heaters they put in the bars.
