Netherlands Off The Beaten Path: 290 reviews and 315 photos

Visit the city of Hoorn on the Ijsselmeer, Hoorn was once the capital of the ancient province of West Friesland. It was once a florishing seaport with ships of the VOC (the East India Company).
the little details high on the buildings are wonderful, so take time to wander around and look up.
There is a statue of three orphan shipboys who sailed on the 'Bontkoe' in 1618 -1620. Don't know why they were wrapped in yellow plastic the day we went to Hoorn. Just behind the boys is a great "fish" snack bar which is not expensive and the freshly cooked fish and mackeral rolls are very good. It is a great place to sit and people watch or watch boats in the harbour.
