While travelling around look out for the turf diggings.
It is sometimes difficult for the visitor to realise how immense a role the bog plays in the lives of some of the people here. Many hours are spent during summer months cutting and bringing home the turf. It is a very labour intensive business, usually the work of the whole family. Walking or driving along some of the little roads in the north of Conamara you can see how the turf cutters have gone about their work since time immemorial.
