Merida's Hotel Caribe won us over right from the start - the only room they had available for our first night was the hotel's only suite - very swish - spacious, with lots of old-world charm and a view from the balcony of the Parc Hidalgo - and we had booked and paid for something far more ordinary! They did move us after that, to a room that opened onto the roof terrace, so what we lost in grandeur, we made up for in a great view of Merida cathedral every time we came and went. The reception staff were helpful, breakfast was good, the chambermaids were so sweet - our rooms were always well cleaned, we were very happy with the standards of service.

Unique Qualities: The hotel's central location means you can walk everywhere you want to get to in the centre of town. It's a lovely old building with a charming inner patio - and a very handsome resident toucan. The restaurant is set in this patio and there's also a cafe/bar that opens onto the square - great for a drink and people-watching. There's a small pool on the roof terrace, ideal for a quick dip at the end of a hot day's sightseeing.
