Ham is one of the superb stately manor houses and palaces that are to be found along the banks of the Thames. The 17th century house was home to the extravagant Lady Dysart, Duchess of Lauderdale and was at the heart of the secret political organisation, the Sealed Knot, that supported the exiled King, Charles the I. The gardens are well looked after and perfect for a stroll back in time. Other things worth seeing are the Orangery, the Ice House, the Still House and the Dairy, complete with cast iron 'cows legs' that support the marble slab counters.

Directions: On the South bank of the Thames between Richmond and Kingston. About a 15 minute walk from Richmond Bridge.
