Way too many people come to NY, and either don't leave their hotel except for quick walking excursions or take taxis everywhere. Why? Because they are afraid of the subway. DON'T FEAR THE SUBWAY! It is a safe and convenient way of travel. I lived in NY for 3 years and never had a car. When you first get there, buy a Metro card for however long you will be in the City. They come in multiple day increments. Then pick up a subway map and you are set. Just be mindful of what is Uptown and what is Downtown. You be cruising like a local in no time.
