Most appartments and shops were built in the 18 th century. Philip Egalite, Ducque of Orleans, the kings cousin built it. The gardens have always been open to the public and became very important for Parisian nightlife in those days. The place was given a bad reputation because of the gambling houses, prostitutes and cabarets. It was a gay cruising area too. Famous writers like Cocteau and colette also lived in the Palais Royal.
