Hungary is a land-locked country, located in the heart
of Central Europe, which shares borders with seven
other countries. It is situated in the Carpathian basin
on mostly plain terrain. It has both surface and subsurface waters.
The largest and shallowest lakes of the Central European region,
such as Lake Balaton or LakeVelence, can be found in the country.
The whole of Hungary's territory belongs to the DanubeRiver basin,
with Tisza and Dráva being the Danube's most important tributaries.

Some 95% of Hungary's surface waters originate outside its
borders so the quality is almost impossible to control.
They are vulnerable to contamination from leakages of industrial
contaminants such as arsenic (also from natural sources)
and heavy metals. Surface water pollution, either indigenous
or originating abroad, may result in environmental problems in
the ecosystem, aquifers and groundwater. Hungary's ground water
stocks are important natural resources, but they do not regenerate
naturally and without costly treatment will remain polluted for a
long time. Nevertheless, the overall quality of surface water has
improved in recent years, although summer low flows can also cause
critical problems.
