One of the best days I spent on Maui we booked a hiking tour of the waterfalls and tropical rain forrest through the tour group Hike Maui. We were fortunate to get one of the guides who was a native of Maui and was very knowledgable. There was no question he did not have an answer to. Hike Maui offers many different full and half day tours of the island including waterfalls, rainforest, mountain ridge and Haleakala Crater. We did the waterfall and rainforrest trek.

The tour begins with the guide driving you part way up the road to Hana. You hike to a look out point through the rainforrest and eventually come to a steep drop off in front of a 200 foot tall waterfall which was used as the opening scene of Jurasic Park. It is slick and you have to watch your step and stay on the path to avoid falling off the side of the mountain. The hike progresses through more of the beautiful forrest up and down many pseudomade steps. You must be in decent shape to make the hike. It is well worth is because you visit several beautiful water falls. You can swim in some and we were able to jump off the side of the cliffs of others (more in another things to do). The guide brings you each a packed lunch and you wind up eating in one of the most beautiful setting at the bottom of a waterfall. Fortunatlely our guide lived on a 10 acre plantaion with lots of fruit and trees and he brought with him home grown bananas, kiwi, pineapples and mango. Great and exhuasting day. Highly recommended.
