Today that small chapel of Portincula is contained in this massive Patriarchal Basilica and Papal Chapel - a church within a church. This is one of the three churches restored by St Francis when he heard - and took literally - the words of Christ: "Go and restore my house."
It was in this small chapel of St. Mary of the Angels on February 24, 1208, that Francis heard the gospel which was to be his earliest Rule. The Poor Clares were founded when Clare received her habit here in Portincula from Francis. Just outside this chapel Francis composed a verse of his canticle "Brother Sun, Sister Moon."
Toward the end of September, 1226, Francis asked to be carried to the Portincula where he died on the evening of October 3rd in the humble convent - now the chapel of the Transitus.
