"Managua" Nicaragua Things to Do Tip by ianerin

Managua is simply not an interesting city. A pair of massive earthquakes in the past century - the most recent in 1972 - have virtually destroyed the old city, and the modern city is just a sprawling mass of neighborhoods. However, if you travel anywhere in Nicaragua, you will most likely at least pass through Managua, and if you are traveling to several different points within the country, Managua will most likely be a primary transfer point and stop over.

Managua does have a few sights, such as the old and new cathedrals. It also has some of the best, and certainly the most diverse cuisine in the country. Barrio Marta Quezada is probably the most interesting neighborhood in the city, but that isn't saying much. There are two interesting markets for which to shop for local wares as well.

One thing to stress in this city is safety. If you don't know where you are going - and sometimes even if you do - it isn't really that safe to walk around in Managua, especially at night. This shouldn't be that much of a problem because the city is so spread out that you will want to take taxis everywhere anyway. Taxis are cheap and much easier to navigate than intra-city public transportation. Make sure to negociate a price before you get in.
