"Wells" United Kingdom Things to Do Tip by Sjalen

United Kingdom Things to Do: 1,060 reviews and 1,155 photos

I was tempted at putting this under "off the beaten path" but that wouldn't be fair since despite few VT pages about Wells, there was clear evidence of tourism when I visited England's smallest city - and small it is. Nevertheless, it is well worth seeing, not only for its famous cathedral with its scissor arches (as in Blackadder when he is talking about "The Bishop of Bath & Wells" in the medieval episodes), but also for its Bishops' Palace and generally historic feel. It is also a great base for visiting both the Cheddar Gorge and caves as well as Glastonbury nearby. Finally, it is in the middle of Somerset which means that the area has some of England's best food and drink with the famous cider, apple pies and organic lamb and other farm produce.

Directions: An hour south-west of Bath and Bristol.
