"The Duomo is always a must..." Il Duomo - Santa Maria del Fiore Tip by NineMiles

Il Duomo - Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence: 251 reviews and 528 photos

The Duomo is always a must see. The cathedrals, churches and places of worship in America (no matter how elaborately constructed) couldn't come within a million miles of touching this masterpiece. Yes, the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake is impressive, but it wasn't even a sparkle in Brigham Young's eye when the Duomo was built. I shouldn't even make the comparison, because there truly isn't one.

Just like with The David statue, the Duomo is massive, beautifully built and highly imaginative.
The perfectly shaped dome of the cathedral was an accomplishment in itself. These days, it's tough to find architecture that is based on aesthetics. Unfortunately, structures in the present seem to be confined by zoning laws, and the desire to optimize space and appeal to the lowest common denominator.
