Originally built in 1147, the ancient St Stephan's Cathedral is at the heart of Vienna and was for many years the tallest building in Europe. The rebuilding of the massive church began in 1359 and wasn't completed until 1433. Some of the key sights at Stephansdom include the pulpit, constructed by Anton Pilgram in 1515 and the huge tower rising 137 meters above the surrounding streets.

Is St Stephan's too massive for you to get a good overall perspective? In Stephansplatz near the church's foundations, you will find a modern copper replica of the church which is only about 1.5 meters tall.

While at Stephansdom, be sure to climb the tower for some amazing views of the city.
