  Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre is the Capital of Brazil's southermost state Rio Grande Do Sul, and miles away from the Brazilian cliches of Samba, Candomble and Capoeira.

It is a very commercial city in a state that is very independent-minded. The Gaucho culture of Rio Grande do Sul puts the people culturally closer to their southern neighbours of Uruguay and Argentina than say the Northeast of Brazil. This is can be seen in the importance of meat (PoA probably has the best rodizios anywhere in Brazil) and cimarrao, which is basically what Uruguayans or Argentines call Mate.

The city is pleasant to visit for a couple of days and has a series of cultural events.
